I already brought this up on VP, but I figured I'd bring it up here as well
There's a difference between 'taking inspiration from' and 'outright stealing', please consider this when making designs. There's already a few sets on VP that are completely stolen from other's OCs, to the point where someone stole a minor's vent art (the source material featured graphic self harm, which was toned down but still included in the original design) and claimed that "he couldn't have known" that it was self harm injuries because "he found it on google". Thankfully I haven't seen this here yet, but I figured I'd bring it up before it became a problem.
If you want to make a design based off of someone's art, contact them first. If you can't find a source, don't design it anyways- keep in mind that they probably deleted the image/their account because people kept stealing their pictures and posting them on other sites (looking at you, pinterest and instagram).
And before people bring it up as an argument, there's a difference between a popular cartoon/video game character made for the public to view, and a privately owned character made by an individual for personal use.

I sometimes look up art for references, things like "but how are folds supposed to look on this kind of dress?" but I do try to find art that's specifically made to be a reference, or real photos.
I admit though, I am inspired by art a lot. But I think it's alright as long as it's really loosely inspired, not copying. When it's more like, "that bunny hoodie is too cute. I should do a bunny hoodie!" And it's not actually the same hoodie, or even really similar. I think it's alright as long as you do the actual design, and the inspiration was just a spark that leads to your original ideas. You know?
Edit: what about designs that are obviously tv/anime/movie/etc characters? VP is full of like, 100% exactly Naruto and stuff.

Many things that designers have made are based on already existing things, so I don't see the problem with making designs that look like those. If the designs aren't EXACTLY the same and are obviously made by someone else, I don't see why people should ask permission for that. Simply copying the design and claiming it as yours is a whole other thing.

Or are you saying those things "intended for public consumption" shouldn't be copied and turned into items? That's my confusion.

Unless the site becomes popular and then it's leaving itself open to being sued for stealing copyright characters. I think it's rather foolish, to be honest.

I think it's rather foolish, to be honest. parody laws cover things like dressup sites/real life costumes, and as long as they don't use the actual copyrighted name attached to the set then it's fair game if gaia hasn't gotten in trouble yet, i doubt any other dressup site is going to get in trouble

I know of Gaia getting in at least one lawsuit.
Just making sure. I didn't want the site to be in trouble.
I'm personally against stealing other people's designs. small time artists and major corporations. But whatever, not my site. /shrug
