idk if it's too early to think for this, but this idea crossed my mind. i already posted it to the IDEAS thread but no one but my buddypal cared of it, hahah. Anyway, i was thinking that the site should have characters, like in Gaia and OurWorld. these characters would show up in specific places of the site. They aren't accounts, unless we want them to be, but most likely these characters won't be owned by anyone. Making the characters would provide a story for the game and make it deeper than what vp was or will ever be. Each character would have their own personal story and their own relationships with the other NPC (non-playable-character) on the site. this would also make the site more rpg like and probably welcome fellow roleplayers with it, as vp was pretty much dead when it came to that. For this to happen we would need Admin's approval, but also everyone else's! This feature would let the artists on this site get creative, maybe we could host a competition, if that isn't too much to ask. The art style wouldn't need to be the same on every character, as this also gives more personality to them. I could say I have experience in concept art as i own about 50 original characters and have started making my own game in RPG Maker........ so far my friend was positive about this idea, but i want to know what the rest of you think! -- I wrote this in the morning: We should let the character who welcomes you to the site have a proper personality and stick to the "story" as time passes. like in Gaia, we could have shops have their own characters/salesmen/etc with a little dialogue for startes we could have two shops, the basic fashion shop and the secondhand store, with their own characters. the character who welcomes you could be the one who also shows up in the help and settings option. later on we could add a shop if we end up getting two types of money like gems and cash, or something like that however we could make it so that in the secondhand store you can purchase/sell stuff for both types of money like you'd have a choice if you want to buy stuff for gems or cash, and those who put stuff for sale would need to put the amount of money they want for the item in both cash and gems. (do you get what i mean,,,,) we could also provide a backstory for the characters in game. the one who welcomes you should be somewhat relateable as they get you in the game? like "Just like you, I was also a mortal once. However here in the Afterlife we forget our pasts and take up new challenges! Let's get you started in your new life." bonus:

It sounds cool indeed, but I don't know if it's a bit too far from the original idea of the sites like this - which was just to represent yourself as a neat and stylish model/star. Therefore I'm about a simplier theme, like the street fashion theme that was suggested, or almost a "no theme" theme.
But this is well a constructed and interesting idea as well, no doubt. (And the picture is sweet.) Just not my cup of tea!

As I mentioned in the name suggestion thread, I'm okay with just explaining the name Afterlife (or any other reincarnation term) as switching from all the dead or malfunctioning sites to one good site. It would just be a name. Or that Afterlife was a brand or a magazine or something like that (related to the street fashion "backstory"). I know it's not as deep or as interesting to those ones interested in stories and mythology, but I'm personally leaning towards a simple idea or a simple site.

Maybe it'd be best to have just a few characters so that it's best maximised as an addition. Like around 3 - 5 at most?

Just to leave it here, if this idea goes ahead, I'm more than able to help in writing any dialogues or backstories etc. as creative writing is one of my main fields (there's an example of my work in my VP blog).
Not sure if you wanted to write it but I keep forgetting to mention that I'm available for it whenever I see mentions of backstories and everything :3

Like around 3 - 5 at most? yesss though it could be that each category has its own (except for shops and forums) like if we had a category for games and help, they'd have their own character each shop would have their own character and the forums would have one character, telling you what each category is about etc. the game would not be run around these characters, keep that in mind. the site is all about the players, but each character would be a good tutorial when getting into the game and later on just... well... decorations and people you can ask simple questions from. example: [imagine a character in the fashion shop] they will introduce themselves for you, and tell what the fashion shop is about and how purchasing works. later on when you return to the fashion shop after doing something else, they just greet you. you have an option where you can ask them a simple, already written quesrion like: how do i use the shop again? what's your story?

Not that I don't love the idea, but - unless we create a heeeck of a lot of dialogue - they're gonna be saying similar things each time you go back and some people may not like it. So we'd still have the characters but they are just seen as part of the shop or maybe just say 'Hello' but it's not as big as it would be in the introduction? I mean, my thought will largely depend on where the characters are located in the shop. Some games have characters whose dialogue goes over the shop (a bit like that character on VP before you log in who tells you to sign up etc.) and it's a pain to click off of when you already know how it all works. but otherwise, I really like the idea and it'd be great to be able to start planning it better when the layout and features of the site are better known :3

I like the idea, maybe these character could guide you around the site when signing up? just what i was thinking of!! each character could give a tutorial to the new player when they enter their shop/etc. we could have one character to be the leader of the tutorial though, probably the character we'd place in the help section.
